Gelato Messina - Chik's Crib

Gelato Messina

Just several blocks down from Jinda Thai is Gelato Messina, purportedly voted 'Australia's Best Gelato'. Gelato Messina is an ice cream place with a hipster-ish vibe. It has a comfortable setting and is good to sit around for a while and relax (MY favourite activity!). We actually went on two consecutive days.

Over our two trips, we sampled several flavours: their Steve Jobs, Hazelnut, Passionfruit, Really Salty Nuts and Coconut & Mango.

Specials for the day
The Steve Jobs is a caramelised white chocolate gelato and macadamia gelato, with macadamia crunch. It was delicious. The Gianduja was good as well, though the dense chocolatey hazelnut flavor can get tiring. I LOVE their Passionfruit, with its intense fruity flavours in contrast to the heaviness of the other nutty flavours we had. I was the only one who liked it though; everybody else felt it was too sour. Excellent. More for me. Their Really Salty Nuts, made of caramel and peanut butter gelato with salted caramel swirls and caramel shortbread, tasted delicious as well.

Coconut & Mango is the creamiest of the lot, with a strong coconut taste. None of us loved coconut, but I could see how coconut fans would go crazy for this flavour.

It's a pretty fun place, and is worth heading over to when you're in the area. But is it really the best gelato place in Melbourne? Maybe it's personal preference, but I like my gelato sticky and dense with unadulterated flavour. This tastes like just another fancy ice cream dressed up in caramel sauce, or with 3 different kinds of sponge cake crumbs mixed in. With all the distraction, it's hard to taste the gelato
