Sight-seeing at Bendigo: Mandurang Valley Winery Part 6

There are several wineries lying on the outskirts of Bendigo, and we did our best to visit the closer ones during the weekend. Purely to satisfy our curosity on the art of wine-making, of course, and perhaps to show our support the local economy.

Unfortunately, the winery recommended to us was closed on that weekend. There, but for the grace of god, (and Telstra reception!), it wasn't a wasted trip, and we found another one near the area.

With a little difficulty, we finally arrived at Mandurang Valley Winery. This winery is family-owned, and in recent years, been exporting their Shiraz to areas as far as China. The owner, an ex-school principle, runs the winery and the tasting room, while the missus oversees the restaurant in the adjourning room. When we got to the winery, the wife was off rehearsing a role for an upcoming festival, and we were entertained by the husband.

It is a pretty place in springtime. As we were showed around the winery, the pride in the owner's voice was evident as he showed us his wine-making equipment and as he discussed the pros and cons of using synthetic stoppers versus corks. We bought a bottle, and he, being a good host, generously waived the individual tasting fees.

If you do drop by the winery, watch out for a large, friendly and goofy dog. He (she?) belongs to the neighbouring farm, but frequently enjoys running up the road to the Mandurang Valley Winery because it, like us, just can't resist the call of wine. Try and have a pat before it gets inevitably shooed off.
